Brežice and Bizeljsko are a perfect day trip destination from continental Croatia, especially for those who want to quickly escape from everyday life, reset and have a good time. You do not need a Slovenian vignette for this trip if you stay on local roads and border areas, which further makes it an easy and affordable trip.

The destination is made special by its heritage, quiet urban pace, proximity to nature and a sense of relaxation while sitting on the terraces of restaurants and wineries that touch the vineyards. Brežice combines a city atmosphere with history and the Sava River, while Bizeljsko exudes hills, vineyards and authentic rural landscapes. They are located a few dozen kilometers from each other, so they can easily be combined during a weekend or a classic day trip.
If there is a place that perfectly describes the warmth of the Slovenian countryside, it is the Pri Martinovih tourist estate. On weekends, there is a demand for 'an extra chair' here, because there are many excursionists who enjoy the authentic gastronomy of this estate. During the week, the estate is quieter - the Tomše family goes about their daily tasks, the estate breathes in its daily rhythm, so you can tour it in peace and get to know it. The head of the family, the vital Franc, will be happy to show you everything the estate has to offer, ending the tour in the wine cellar with a glass of his signature wine.
As you walk through the estate, you will smell the aroma of local food, and Franco's wife, Irena, will put a homemade Posavina breakfast or lunch on the table. The Martin family's estate is located in the picturesque Brežice area, near the Croatian-Slovenian border, so this is the place to start your Posavina adventure.
"Do you know where Croatians cool off on warmer days?" - asked our tour guide Miha Galič, showing us a river beach similar to the one we see on social media. It is located at the entrance to Brežice, along the Krka River itself. The central place is the Beach bar Tochka where you can spend the whole day in nature enjoying various activities - here you can rent a canoe, explore the river, enjoy the landscaped grassy beach or organize a picnic with friends. The atmosphere is relaxed, the nature is beautiful, and the entire area is ideal for anyone who loves an active vacation without stress and crowds.
The Krka River, pleasant for swimming in the summer, flows into the Sava a little further on, and water - river or thermal - greatly shapes Brežice. You will hear about this and learn a lot about it at the Brežice Water Tower, one of the city's recognizable urban symbols and an interesting example of industrial and technical heritage. Located in the city center, the water tower once played a key role in supplying the population with water and was an important part of the development of local infrastructure. Today, it no longer has its original function, but it has been preserved as a cultural and historical landmark that reminds us of times gone by. The building stands out for its simple but striking architecture and is easily recognizable in the urban landscape. It rises 46 meters above the city, with 167 steps leading to the top, but there is also an elevator for those who want an easier climb. The legend of the eight hearts built into the tower attracts special attention. According to the story, an Austro-Hungarian official was in love with a woman from Brežice, so he left his unspoken love forever in the architecture of the tower.
Be sure to combine a visit to the Water Tower with a visit to Brežice Castle (one ticket), which is one of the most important cultural and historical monuments in Posavje and dominates the old part of the town of Brežice. It is a 17th-century castle that is home to the Posavje Museum of Brežice and the center of cultural life in the region. It is especially famous for its impressive Knight's Hall, decorated with wall and ceiling frescoes depicting mythological and historical scenes and is among the most beautiful Baroque interiors in Slovenia.
The museum offers permanent and temporary exhibitions that depict the life of the people, crafts, art and cultural heritage of this region, and visitors can learn about the development of Brežice and the surrounding area through interactive displays and rich museum collections. Today, the castle is not just a museum - concerts, cultural events and numerous programs are held here, giving the entire area a special life and energy.
You will also see that Brežice is special by exploring its city streets. The tourist experience called the Path of Love is actually a route that leads through the old city center and connects the most important sights of the city through stories, legends and details that ordinary visitors often do not notice. The walk is accompanied by friendly narration of interesting facts by local guides who will unite the history, love legends and the eno-gastronomic story of Brežice in a special way.

It is the story of food and wine that will take you to the Wine Road that leads from Brežica to Bizeljsko, one of the most popular wine and food destinations in this region. The road passes through hills covered with vineyards, through small villages and peaceful landscapes where the tradition of winegrowing has been nurtured for generations. Each stop on this route offers a special story, from food and wine to nature and local customs, and many of them also carry the Brežice Selected label, a certificate of excellence that Brežice awards to top-quality products and services, based on local raw materials and an authentic story about the tradition, culture and lifestyle of the inhabitants of the Brežice municipality.
Following these signs will lead you to the Riba in pol restaurant, with a 46-year tradition. Next to the restaurant is an organic fish farm, where for years you can enjoy the only organic trout in Slovenia, without industrial processes, served in the traditional way - grilled or breaded in corn flour. In addition to trout, Riba in pol also offers breaded carp, all served with locally grown vegetables and wine from local winemakers.
When you're on this wine road, be sure to take a look at Repnica - wine cellars created in sandy soil. One of the most popular (visited by over 15,000 visitors annually) is Repnica Najger, the oldest part of which dates back to the 19th century.
The tour of Repnica lasts a little over 60 minutes, you need layered clothing (the temperature is always around 10 degrees) and along with the tour and descent to -12 meters, you will taste Bizelj wines and sample local products.
Brežice and Bizeljsko have become increasingly known for their top-quality wines and rich wine culture in recent years, and among the newer and most interesting stories, the Mihelin Winery, also the holder of the Brežice Selected label, stands out. What makes this winery special is not only the quality of the wine, but also the energy of the young people who run it - sister and brother, Andreja and Vinko Mihelin. They are the fourth generation of the family who have turned their love for vineyards into a contemporary wine story recognized beyond the borders of Slovenia.
Their approach combines tradition and innovation: they respect family heritage, but use modern production methods and controlled fermentation to emphasize the authenticity of the Bizelj terroir. Their sparkling wines produced using the classic method stand out in particular, captivating with their elegance, fine bubbles and freshness, while their still wines faithfully reflect the minerality and character of the hilly region. A visit to the Mihelin Winery is not just a wine tasting, but a complete experience. Here you can walk through the vineyards, hear the family story and learn about the production process, from vine to glass.
And so the order of heritage, eno-gastro experience and sugar at the end of the trip a visit to the Alpaca Ranch Pepito & Friends. This is a ranch where the main inhabitants are alpacas, whose calm character and curious behavior quickly win over visitors of all generations. The whole story began when the current owner of the farm, Nataša Dobravc Škof, received Pepito for her birthday, for whom she soon bought a friend and changed her job and devoted herself completely to this ranch.
Today, the ranch is home to about seventy animals of different species, and visitors can feed, pet and photograph them during guided tours. The small ponies and young alpacas, which are very sociable and peaceful, are especially popular, as are the mini Shetland ponies, miniature Himalayan goats, ducks, chickens and geese... The farm often organizes educational workshops, children's visits and outdoor gatherings, and direct contact with the animals is for many the most beautiful part of the trip, but also one of the reasons why they return to this wonderful place.
