Gastronomy Paradise in Fruške Terme

Many people associate summer with the sea, but there are more and more people who are looking for a vacation away from the crowded beaches and summer crowds. Instead of spending all day in the sun, the focus is on places surrounded by nature, where the canopy of centuries-old trees provides shade, mornings smell of the forest, and pleasantly cool evenings invite you to long walks and relax outdoors. Just such a place is hidden on the slopes of Fruška Gora, the only mountain in Vojvodina and one of the most beautiful national parks in Serbia. At about 200 meters above sea level, in the picturesque Vrdnik, is located Fruške Terme, one of the most modern thermal resorts in the region. It is only thirty kilometers from Novi Sad and a little over a hundred from Osijek, which makes it an ideal choice for a weekend or a multi-day vacation.

Vrdnik has been known for decades as a climatic health resort thanks to its exceptionally clean air, high ozone concentration, and special microclimate created by the combination of the forests of the Fruška Gora National Park and mild air currents. More than 200 sunny days a year, pleasantly cool nights and a complete absence of industrial pollution create ideal conditions for rest and recovery at any time of the year. It is therefore not surprising that many people come here to recharge their batteries, get rid of stress and at least briefly escape from everyday life. However, in recent years, Fruške Terme has attracted another group of guests - true lovers of gastronomy. Namely, in addition to thermal pools, top-notch wellness and accommodation, the resort has built a reputation as a place where food is not just part of the hotel service, but one of the main reasons for coming.

There is a reason why experienced travelers often say that the quality of a hotel is best seen at breakfast. Judging by the offer at Fruške Terme, the day here starts in the best possible way. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you are greeted by the smells of freshly baked bread, warm croissants and homemade pastries that come out of the oven throughout the morning. The tables are full of fresh fruit, seasonal ingredients, homemade cheeses, local cured meats, various types of yogurt, cereals and spreads, while the chefs prepare egg dishes in front of the guests according to their wishes. Fans of a healthier start to the day can choose from smoothies, freshly squeezed juices, nuts and light salads, while those who prefer a richer continental breakfast will enjoy hot dishes, homemade pies and traditional specialties. What is especially pleasing is the fact that a large part of the ingredients are purchased from local producers, so products that retain the authentic taste of this region end up on the plates.

A hotel buffet is often associated with large quantities of food and a monotonous offer. At Fruške Terme, this concept has been taken to a whole new level. The emphasis is not on quantity but on diversity, quality and constant renewal of the offer. During lunch and dinner, guests can choose from several types of meat, fish, vegetarian dishes, freshly prepared pasta, a rich selection of salads, seasonal vegetables and numerous desserts. Special care is taken to ensure that the menu follows the seasons, so in the summer lighter dishes, fresh vegetables, fruit and Mediterranean flavours dominate, while in the winter traditional specialities characteristic of this region are more prominent. This approach allows guests who stay for several days to try something new every day, something local, which makes enjoying food at this place unique.

The central gastronomic venue of the resort is certainly the Piazza restaurant, which offers carefully designed international and local dishes throughout the day. However, the real reason why guests book a table is the increasingly popular 'Mediterranean Evenings'. The concept is simple, but extremely successful. Several times a week the restaurant turns into a small culinary postcard of the Mediterranean. The tables are filled with fresh fish, seafood, shellfish, octopus, risottos, homemade pasta, light sauces based on olive oil and aromatic herbs, while the scents of rosemary, basil and thyme fill the entire space. It is precisely this philosophy of Mediterranean cuisine that makes these evenings one of the most sought-after gastronomic events at the resort. With a rich selection of salads, cheeses, marinated vegetables and light desserts, dinner takes on an atmosphere that we would rather expect in a restaurant by the sea than in the heart of Srijem.

As attractive as the Mediterranean is, it would be a shame to leave Fruške Terme and not get to know the authentic flavors of Vojvodina. This is the responsibility of Etno kuća, with the eponymous Etno restaurant that cherishes the traditional cuisine of this part of Serbia. The rustic interior, wooden tables, details reminiscent of old Vojvodina houses and the smell of dishes being prepared slowly create a feeling of warmth that is rarely found today. The menu is dominated by recipes passed down through generations. Homemade soups, slow-roasted meats, barbecue, stews, freshly prepared side dishes, homemade bread, local cheeses and seasonal salads are just a part of the offer. Traditional desserts attract special attention, from cherry strudel to homemade cakes prepared with old recipes, which perfectly round off the meal. Ethno House is not intended as a haute cuisine restaurant but as a place where you will experience true Vojvodina hospitality, so if you stay here, be sure to ask about traditional tamburitza evenings.
