Wines of Bregovita Hrvatska

Winemakers and winegrowers of Bregovita Hrvatska are proud to present wines made from more than twenty grape varieties. Alongside single-varietal wines, they also produce blends, predicate wines, and aromatised wines. They take particular pride in the richness of their varieties and wine styles. At BregPremier in Zagreb on 23 March 2026 – a tasting of new wines from Bregovita Hrvatska – they emphasised that they aim to conquer the market not through quantity, but through quality.

This year’s BregPremier brought together 40 winemakers from Bregovita Hrvatska, who presented more than 200 wines. In addition to last year’s vintage, there were also older vintages that have only now reached their desired characteristics.

“We are proud of wines from our indigenous varieties, as well as those from varieties that have adapted to the sunny slopes of our hills. We are also presenting our sparkling wines. The past year has shown that our wines are worthy of the highest international recognition, but we are especially pleased that many consumers are discovering their favourite wines among ours for special occasions,” said Miroslav Polovanec, President of the Association of Winemakers and Winegrowers of Bregovita Hrvatska.

Experts and scientists agree that the diversity of grape varieties in Bregovita Hrvatska should be incorporated into the branding of the region.

“Central hilly Croatia is not dominated by a single ‘major’ grape variety, as is the case in some other wine regions. It is a geographically heterogeneous area, which is reflected in the diversity of grape varieties across its vineyards. Bregovita Hrvatska should embrace this as an advantage. In today’s wine world, originality and authenticity are highly valued – and that is precisely what this region offers through the diversity of its varietal composition,” said Professor Ana-Marija Jagatić Korenika from the Department of Viticulture and Oenology at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb.

Although BregPremier had a celebratory tone, winemakers and winegrowers also addressed the challenges they are currently facing. Of particular concern is grapevine yellows (flavescence dorée). The outcome of the fight against this aggressive vine disease, they note, will determine whether they will have anything to offer the market in the years ahead.

“Grapevine yellows is a disease that affects not only vines, but also production security, winemakers’ incomes, and the long-term sustainability of viticulture. It is not an issue for a single vineyard, but for the entire sector, and it requires a coordinated and systematic response. It is encouraging that this has been recognised at the level of the European Union and that combating this disease has been placed high among the priorities in the wine package. The package allows for the planting of vines without restrictions. It is important that we make use of the available funds and ensure that they reach winemakers and growers as efficiently as possible,” said Marko Vešligaj, Member of the European Parliament.

BregPremier is traditionally held every year on the first Monday of spring. The first part of the event is intended for hospitality professionals – restaurateurs, hoteliers, and beverage distributors – while the second part offers the public an exclusive insight into the latest wine releases from Bregovita Hrvatska.
