Digital detox in Jezersko

Jezersko in Slovenia offers what many people seek today — an escape from noise, eco-luxury without excess, and a hotel that has become synonymous with silence, nature, and an authentic mountain experience. Located just half an hour’s drive from Ljubljana, in the heart of northern Slovenia, it sits at nearly 1,000 metres above sea level.

Surrounded by the peaks of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and green valleys that awaken in full force during spring, Jezersko is a destination that does not demand attention, yet effortlessly wins visitors over. Spring arrives here quietly, almost discreetly. Snow retreats from the mountain slopes, streams grow stronger, and the meadows transform into carpets of flowers. It is the season when Jezersko reveals its finest face, which is why so many travellers choose it as a weekend retreat or a short restorative break.

Within this natural balance stands out a mountain retreat that has redefined the concept of an alpine holiday — Vila Planinka. Built on the foundations of a former mountain hotel, it has been completely transformed into a contemporary eco-hotel that blends seamlessly into the landscape of Jezersko.

The building that now houses Vila Planinka has a long history as a mountain hotel that for decades welcomed hikers and lovers of the Alps. Yet it was only through its recent renovation that it gained a new dimension — one of sustainable luxury. Instead of mass tourism, the hotel has chosen to focus on a small number of guests and a high-quality experience. As a result, Jezersko has not become a mass-tourism destination, but rather a place that nurtures authenticity and a personal approach to every visitor.

Its philosophy is not luxury in the conventional sense, but the luxury of silence, natural materials, and complete detachment from everyday life. The hotel was restored with the idea of preserving local tradition and nature, something noticeable from the very entrance. Interiors are dominated by wood, stone, and natural textiles, without unnecessary decoration. Each room is designed as a space for reset — no televisions, no needless technology, with the emphasis placed instead on peace and mountain views. For wellness lovers, there is also a sauna hidden from public view, best combined in spring with time spent outdoors. One of Vila Planinka’s distinctive concepts is its “digital detox” philosophy — guests come here to slow down, sleep better, breathe more deeply, and reconnect with nature. The sounds of nature replace urban noise, while the nights are so quiet that all one hears is the wind through the treetops and the river in the valley below.

Spring in Jezersko is a particularly special experience. The mountain air is fresh, temperatures are ideal for walks, and nature awakens in full strength. The trails around the heart-shaped Planšar Lake and through the valley become perfect for gentle hiking routes, while snow-covered peaks still dominate the background. Here, the day is not planned — it simply unfolds. Mornings begin with long gazes towards the mountains and a wonderful breakfast made with local produce, days pass in walking or cycling, and evenings end in a silence that feels almost therapeutic.

Be sure to look up at the sky — with so little artificial lighting, this is a place where touching the stars does not seem impossible. If you enjoy exploring destinations by bicycle, Jezersko also offers one of the most beautiful cycling experiences in Slovenia, especially in spring when nature is at its most vibrant. Gentle valley routes are ideal for recreational cyclists and families, while more demanding ascents towards mountain passes attract experienced riders looking for a challenge. The rides pass through untouched nature, alongside crystal-clear water sources, green meadows, and spectacular views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps.

Alongside its irresistible peace and relaxation, Vila Planinka is also memorable for its gastronomy. Dining here is not merely an addition to the stay, whether you visit for a weekend or stop by for a gastronomic experience after a day trip. Food lies at the very heart of the experience, carefully conceived as a journey through Slovenia “on the plate and in the glass”. At the centre of this story are the young chefs — Chef Jernej Kamič and sous-chef Jure Koren Vodnik — whose interpretation of cuisine is rooted in local and seasonal ingredients, with an emphasis on purity of flavour and simplicity of preparation. Their dishes are inspired by Alpine cuisine, yet interpreted in a contemporary way, without excess but with a clear regional identity.

Adding the finishing touch are sommeliers Vanesa Centrih and Marko Koren, who open the door to the world of wine for every guest in an interactive and almost educational manner. Their workshops are not classic tastings, but dynamic experiences exploring the flavours, aromas, and character of Slovenian wine regions through no fewer than 250 wine labels that follow a philosophy of sustainability and authenticity. Special emphasis is placed on indigenous grape varieties and biodynamic wines, with every glass accompanied by a story about terroir, climate, and the people behind it. It is precisely this combination of knowledge, passion, and storytelling that makes the gastronomy of Vila Planinka a truly unique eno-gastronomic experience, one that requires only a single thing: time to enjoy it.
