Kanfanarska butiga: a place of taste and spirit of Kanfanar
If you want to take a piece of Kanfanar home with you, before you set off on a tour of the taverns, wineries and family farms, it is best to stop by the Kanfanar boutique. Located in the centre of the town, this small shop is much more than a souvenir shop – it is a showcase of local producers and a kind of treasury of everything that makes Kanfanar recognizable.
The project was created by a joint initiative of the Municipality of Kanfanar and the Tourist Board, with a simple but important idea: to give space to local OPGs, craftsmen and small producers to present their products in one place. Instead of classic tourist souvenirs, here you will find what is truly produced in the Kanfanar area – from food and wine to handicrafts and art objects.
The first thing that catches your eye on the shelves is a monograph about Kanfanar, a kind of guide through the rich history and heritage of the town. It was initially intended as a special gift, but due to strong visitor interest, it is now available to anyone who wants to learn more about this part of Istria.
Of course, fuži are also indispensable - a pasta that has become one of the symbols of Kanfanar. They are produced by local producer Klara Marić, and in addition to traditional fuži, other types of homemade pasta are also offered. Not far from them are jars of honey from OPG Marić, whose bee products have enjoyed an excellent reputation among lovers of Istrian delicacies for years.
The wine section of the offer brings together several famous Kanfanar winemakers. There are labels from the Trošt, Lunika, Tenver and Prima Volta wineries, each with its own recognizable style and character. Olive oils from local producers go well with the wines, among which OPG Olimp stands out in particular.
Numerous handmade items give the boutique a special charm. Wooden bottle racks, serving boards and decorative items are created in a small workshop by a local craftsman who makes each piece by hand, which is why no two are exactly alike. His works are often combined with products from other family farms, creating original gift packages that combine wine, olive oil and traditional wood.
Lovers of Istrian gastronomy will also find boškarin sausages created in collaboration with the famous company Azrri. They offer different flavors, from truffle to hemp, and these are products that represent one of the most famous indigenous Istrian foods in a modern way.
Of particular interest are replicas of ceramic vessels found during archaeological excavations of medieval Dvigrad. The original findings served as inspiration for useful objects adapted to today's times, so visitors can take home a small part of the rich history of this region.
On the shelves are also T-shirts dedicated to Jakovlja, the most famous event in Kanfanar. Every year, a new design is created, first worn by the organizers and, due to great interest, later put on sale. There are also official Kanfanar T-shirts decorated with motifs of Dvigrad, boškarin, fuži, the Lim channel, and stone, in the recognizable yellow color that has become the place's trademark.
Among the most interesting works are certainly the artistic paintings by the author Olbica, which at first glance look like drawings or graphics. Only when you get closer to them do you discover that they are made exclusively with sewing thread. Each motif is created by carefully guiding the thread through a sewing machine, layer by layer, without paint or brushes. The result is an unusual texture that regularly surprises visitors and becomes one of the most photographed attractions of the boutique. Greta Živolić from the Kanfanar Municipality Tourist Board explained all this to us beautifully and turned this small tour of the boutique into a great experience of the taste and spirit of Kanfanar.
The Kanfanar boutique may not be large, but in a few dozen square meters it manages to tell the story of a place that is proud of its producers, gastronomy, tradition, and creative people. For anyone who wants to get to know Kanfanar through its flavors and products, this is the best place to start.
