Opatija is one of the most beautiful destinations on the Adriatic, a town with a rich history and a continuous tradition of tourism dating back to 1884. Situated along the Kvarner Bay, Opatija entices visitors with its Belle Époque architecture, lush parks, and promenades such as the famous Franz Joseph lungomare.
This town is an ideal year-round destination, and November 2025 will be marked by not one, but two captivating stories – the beginning of the month will celebrate the Chocolate Festival, while the end of the month will signal the start of Advent, transforming Opatija into a magical place that sees the old year out and the new one in. Opatija is special in many ways, which is evident in its appeal to visitors from the mainland as well as neighbouring countries, particularly Slovenians and Italians, who choose it as their retreat!
On the site where the Trgovačko Opatija company once stood, now rises one of the most modern hotels in the region – Keight Hotel Opatija, part of the global Curio Collection by Hilton. The architectural studio 3LHD designed this hotel as a contemporary sanctuary that reflects Opatija’s rich heritage while offering comfort and exclusivity to today’s traveller. The hotel’s unique character lies in its blend of minimalist design with natural colours that evoke the sea and sky, creating an atmosphere of warmth and security. It is the perfect answer for guests who wish to explore Opatija while enjoying luxury and relaxing facilities in the heart of the town. The hotel’s name, “Keight”, honours Katarina Hauptfeld, a visionary who dedicated her life to promoting the Adriatic and Croatia to the world. Her spiritual number symbolises not only eight but also infinity, a motif subtly woven throughout the hotel. Katarina founded Katarina Line, one of the most successful small maritime companies for island cruises, demonstrating that with will and effort, anything is possible.
With 54 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, the hotel offers everything a modern traveller could desire. Each room is designed to foster a sense of calm and comfort, equipped with a work area, mini-bar, and a specially designed bathroom overlooking Opatija. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow abundant daylight and stunning views of Opatija’s rooftops and surrounding nature, so if you choose to relax in your room, you are in good company!
The centerpiece of the Keight Hotel experience is the impressive wellness centre, featuring a 25-metre indoor pool, the largest in Opatija. Here, guests can indulge in a variety of massages and saunas that rejuvenate body and mind, while tailoring their experience upon arrival. However, the true magic awaits on the rooftop: an infinity pool and lounge bar offering unparalleled views of the sea and spectacular sunsets. It is the perfect spot for relaxation and leisure, and it also enhances the enjoyment of destination events. During Opatija’s Chocolate Festival, for instance, guests can sample one of three ‘chocolate’ cocktails, enjoy a brunch with premium coffee, or sip a glass of local wine, combining wellness and gastronomy to round off the day perfectly. The rooftop is also a meeting place after work and during Advent, when the historic town adorns itself for the season, welcoming numerous visitors.
The hotel’s restaurant, Pierrot, offers authentic gastronomic experiences based on local and seasonal ingredients. It differs from traditional five-star hotels: breakfast is served from display cabinets and complemented by specially curated dishes from the kitchen, on Sundays a special ‘Sunday lunch’ is offered to all guests, including non-residents, and dinner, whether à la carte or part of a half-board package, provides a gastronomic experience to remember. While enjoying the cosy interior, guests may notice small figurines adorning the décor. These are Pierrot dolls, which seem to have captured the heart of the hotel, displayed on shelves, in cabinets, and as mosaics on walls and wallpaper.
“The figurines are a tribute to the late husband of the owner, an honest homage to his passion for Pierrot dolls collected from around the world. This unique collection, mainly displayed in the lobby, represents the whimsical and melancholic character of Pierrot, brought into the restaurant with its distinctive charm, creating a special atmosphere,” explains hotel manager Davor Kovčalija, noting that talented local artist Lara Karlavaris successfully integrated the Pierrot passion into the hotel’s walls, crafting visually enchanting experiences for visitors. This demonstrates how personal stories and family heritage can be intricately woven into a non-traditional Opatija hotel, which in its first year has already become a second home for many urban travellers.
