Jastrebarsko Wine Festival

It was 1932. Already well known American actor Charlie Chaplin travelled from Vienna to Trieste, but he chose not to go through the Alpine crossings and high mountain roads. Instead, he ventured through the valleys of North-Western Croatia. Chaplin spent some time in Villa Horvat, a big house still standing in the middle of Plešivica village, where was a restaurant and a hotel. The owners, family Horvat, was buying Portugizac wine from their neighbours, the Režek family. We s

Jagunić - Where the Black Cat goes

When one comes to the terrace of the Jagunić home, one only stands still and looks over the rolling hills of Plešivica, the town of Jastrebarsko in the distance, and rows of neatly built vineyards beneath. Zen! The tranquillity is sometimes broken with the sound of bird scarer cannon, ensuring the grape is left intact. Mr Dominik Jagunić smiles. He knows it is not rare for his guests to act as same as we did. We came at Jagunić's just a few days before the grape harvest began

Wine House Jana - a Slavonian flair on Plešivica

He paints, makes wine, cooks Slavonian foods, prepares peka, and is in love with Plešivica. All of this is one man, Mr Martin Petrović, the owner and manager of the Vinska kuća Jana (Wine House Jana) in Prodin Dol. In the enchanting surrounding of vineyards and forests, on the high slopes of the Plešivica Hill, he welcomes guests for excellent foods and accommodation. When we phoned him, announcing our arrival, he didn't hesitate to offer us three or four specialities of the

Mladina - the crown of Plešivica sparkling wines

A bit older generations in Zagreb would remember well the day outs in Mladina and Plešivica Wine Road. Mladina carries the name of a good place for fun, barbecue, and a glass or ten of solid wine. It was a family getaway as well as the drinkers' paradise. And it does have the right to be remembered. Mladina is the oldest organised wine cellar in the Jastrebarsko region, with a tradition going back to 1736 when the count Erdödy opened it, following the noble job of viticulture

Old traditions of Jastrebarsko and Sveta Jana

Once upon a time, the Jastrebarsko and Sveta Jana region was a place of castles, forts, and curias. There were churches surrounded by massive walls, while the cattle gazed the pasturelands near the creeks where the mills worked. Today, the old architecture is still preserved but most of the mills are gone. The domestic animals are few, and children's play is not a sound of the streets anymore. Still, the culture vultures and history buffs may find a lot of interesting sights

Sirovica Wines - How to be In?

On the eastern slopes of Plešivica is Lokošin Dol. The place is maybe not easy to find, but once there one cannot miss the Stjepan Sirovica's house and winery, as he drives around in his van with a huge motto: „Budi in, pij gemišt fin“ (Be in, drink a fine gemišt). So, we did. At 9 am. Don't think we are irreparable drunks, as gemišt is a favourite drink at any time of the day in Plešivica. It comes from the German word gemischt, meaning mixed, and connotes a balance of mixed
