Searching for Trout

Croatia prides itself on its fish dishes, which is certainly fair and commendable, but some fish seem more savoury than others. Thus, many Croats in the continental Croatia will primarily reach out to the markets of their cities for seafood, while freshwater fish remains somehow side-lined. And when it comes to freshwater fish, it is often thought of fish stews and fatty catfish, while neglecting trout. Trout comes in large quantities, it swims in various rivers, is extremely

Konaci Homestead - on the path of gastronomy ghosts

Winding road takes us through evergreen forest, giving us beautiful vistas on the Klek rock. We pass the mountain village of Bjelsko, a traditional starting point for ascending the Mt. Klek. The road ascends more and more until it comes to a mountain valley of Jasenak. This village was once shepherd’s paradise, while nowadays most of its inhabitants live from tourism and wood industry. Only Mrs Dušanka Čavrag makes beautiful cheese, as it was custom when Jasenak was full of c

Tradition of Ogulin and Josipdol Gastronomy

The gastronomy in Ogulin is based on its natural surroundings. As it can be seen in the ethnographic department in the local museum, Ogulin has mountainous culture, similar both to the Gorski kotar and Lika regions. Its folklore, folk costumes, way of life, architecture are connected to these regions, although they bear certain specificities of its own. This translates as well in the culinary traditions, cared for in places such as the restaurant Frankopan. Some gastronomy fe

Noble Dining in the Restaurant Frankopan, Ogulin

You can’t miss it – Hotel Frankopan is situated next to the old Frankopan fort, the main sight of Ogulin. It is a renovated 18th century building, once used for the administrative affairs. It is famous for its urban architecture, historical importance, recreational and relaxation tourism, as a congress centre, but we came in Frankopan out of only one reason – its gastronomy. We knew something good is going on in Frankopan, as we saw it was awarded as one of hundred best Croat

Ogulin Sauerkraut - Top Gastronomy Brand of Ogulin

The end of summer is time when cabbage is harvested and turned into sauerkraut, in a special procedure of making it sour. Ogulin is nationwide-famous for this product, deemed as best. But, the true Ogulin sauerkraut is made with special kind of cabbage, called Ogulinac. But how is it done? This is the reason why we visited Dujmić Selo, a village on the shores of Sabljaci Lake, and talked to Mr. Marinko Sabljak, director of Agricultural Association Ogulin (PZ Ogulin). The asso

Cheese from the Mountain: OPG Čavrag, Jasenak

At the foothills of the highest mountain in Gorski kotar Bjelolasica (1534m), next to the Jasenčica creek, since the Middle ages people live in a mountain place of Jasenak. The legend tells us some people got lost in the woods and suddenly came to a mountain meadow surrounded by the ash tree (jasen). They have settled here and started a life among the ash trees. Today we know most of the inhabitants came from Gomirje (place where the westernmost Christian Orthodox monastery i

Ogulin Fairytales

The magical natural heritage of the Ogulin region, its turbulent historical events and interesting local happenings and its people, have always ignited the imagination of the inhabitants of Ogulin’s surroundings. Folk traditions have also enriched every corner of our region and present us with the exceptional intangible heritage of our ancestors. The greatest contribution to raising the value of folklore was made by Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić in her autobiography and Priče iz davn
